Effects of Triaxiality on the Statistics of Large-separation Gravitational Lenses

چکیده
We study the statistics of large-separation gravitational lens systems produced by non-spherical halos in the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model. Specifically, we examine how the triaxiality of CDM halos affects the overall lensing probabilities and the relative numbers of different image configurations (double, quadruple, and naked cusp lenses). We find that triaxiality significantly enhances lensing probabilities by a factor of ∼2–4, so it cannot be ignored. If CDM halos have central density slopes α . 1.5, we predict that a significant fraction (&20%) of large-separation lenses should have naked cusp image configurations; this contrasts with lensing by isothermal (α ≈ 2) galaxies where naked cusp configurations are rare. The image multiplicities depend strongly on the inner density slope α: for α = 1, the naked cusp fraction is &60%; while for α = 1.5, quadruple lenses are actually the most probable. Thus, the image multiplicities in large-separation lenses offer a simple new probe of the inner density profiles of dark matter halos. We also compute the expected probabilities and image multiplicities for lensed quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and argue that the recent discovery of the large-separation quadruple lens SDSS J1004+4112 is consistent with expectations for CDM. A ug 2 00 4 Strong Gravitational Lenses in a Cold Dark Matter Universe
We present theoretical and observational studies of strong gravitational lenses produced by clusters of galaxies. Our purpose is to test the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model at small and highly nonlinear scales where it has been claimed that the CDM model may confront several difficulties. We concentrate our attention on the statistics of strong gravitational lenses because the strong lensing is se...

The distribution of image separations in multiply-imaged gravitational lens systems can simultaneously constrain the core structure of dark matter halos and cosmological parameters. We study lens statistics in flat, low-density universes with different equations of state w = pQ/ρQ for the dark energy component. The fact that dark energy modifies the distance-redshift relation and the mass funct...

Spiral galaxies as oblate gravitational lenses. ABSTRACT We present the relation between the density distribution of the oblate isothermal mass distribution, characterised by a rotation velocity, core radius and oblateness, and the corresponding line-of-sight (LOS) surface mass distribution. We find that a correct treatment of the inclination of an oblate mass distribution can have large conseq...
متن کاملConstraints on Dark Energy and the Inner Cluster Mass Profile from Strong Lensing Statistics
Strong gravitational lensing is a useful probe of both the intrinsic properties of the lenses and the cosmological parameters of the universe. The large number of model parameters and small sample of observed lens systems, however, have made it difficult to obtain useful constraints on more than a few parameters from lensing statistics. Here we examine how the recent WMAP measurements help impr...
متن کاملEffects of Ellipticity and Shear on Gravitational Lens Statistics
We study the effects of ellipticity in lens galaxies and external tidal shear from neighboring objects on the statistics of strong gravitational lenses. For isothermal lens galaxies normalized so that the Einstein radius is independent of ellipticity and shear, ellipticity reduces the lensing cross section slightly, and shear leaves it unchanged. Ellipticity and shear can significantly enhance ...
